York Valkyrie will be hoping to get back to winning ways after back-to-back defeats when they visit winless Huddersfield Giants at Laund Hill on Sunday (2pm) in the Betfred Women’s Super League.

Reigning BWSL champions York have suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2021 and for only the second time since the arrival of Director of Rugby Lindsay Anfield that same year.

Leeds Rhinos claimed revenge for last year’s Grand Final defeat to York by prevailing 16-10 at the LNER Community Stadium earlier this month in the BWSL before St Helens denied the Valkyrie a place at Wembley Stadium with a second successive Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Semi-Final victory, this time by a 32-2 scoreline.

After the disappointment of a first league defeat of the season and a Cup Semi-Final exit, York will be seeking a response in West Yorkshire this weekend.

Huddersfield have endured a tough start to this year’s Betfred Women’s Super League, opening the season with three consecutive heavy losses.

The Giants opened their season with a 66-4 defeat to Leeds at the AMT Headingley Stadium before going down 60-6 at three-time and defending Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup holders St Helens.

Wigan Warriors then put Huddersfield to the sword in a 102-0 rout at the John Smith’s Stadium last time out.

Huddersfield will be desperate to earn a first league of the season as soon as possible, particularly having been tipped by many to kick on in 2024 after a shock late-season 20-16 win at Leeds in 2023 and after signing captain Bethan Oates and star winger Amelia Brown to professional contracts over the off-season.

The Valkyrie meanwhile will be seeking to put their year back on track and pick up from where their 2024 started off after wins over Sheffield Eagles (10-76), Featherstone Rovers (twice, 80-6 and 70-0), St Helens (20-16) and Barrow Raiders (8-28).
