York Knights get their Betfred Championship season underway with a trip to Boundary Park to take on Oldham on Sunday (3pm)!
Itâs the first time the two have met in the league since 2021, although they came up against each other in last yearâs 1895 Cup Quarter final at the LNER Community Stadium.
That day, the Knights won 46-12, with tries from Will Dagger (2), Richie Myler (2), Conor Fitzsimons, Liam Harris, Myles Harrison and AJ Towse.
The Knights went on to finish fourth in the Championship, and reach the play-off semi finals, while Oldham won League 1 and earned promotion back to the second tier, three years after their relegation.
Mark Applegarthâs side will face what looks like a strong Oldham squad, led by former Great Britain international, Sean Long. Heâs built a side with plenty of experience, and following their promotion heâs made some eye-catching signings.
Josh Drinkwater, who has played in Super League for Hull KR, Catalans Dragons and last year, Warrington Wolves will feature in the halves, while former Castleford and Huddersfield forward, Adam Milner could be lining up against his former Cas captain, Knightsâ hooker Paul McShane.
There are also a couple of familiar names, with former York winger Kieron Dixon at the club, and half-back Riley Dean, who played nine games on loan with York from Warrington in 2021.
After a slow start in the league last year, the Knights are looking to get off the mark quicker this season as they look to build on what they achieved in 2024.
None of the long term injuries will be available yet for the game, but with no problems reported after last weekâs Challenge Cup tie against Hull KR, Mark Applegarth will have a good squad to select from.
