York Knights hooker, Paul McShane was one of the close season signings that really caught the eye both in the city and in the Betfred Championship!
The former England international and Man of Steel, signed a two year deal with York RLFC after more than a decade at Castleford Tigers in Super League.
With the new season now underway, McShane says it’s a challenge he’s been looking forward to.
“I’m under no illusions how tough this league is,”he said. “There are some tough places to go especially in the winter time, so I think it’s a tough start to the season for us, but it’s something I’m really looking forward to.
“I’ve followed York for a number of years, when my friend Brett Delaney was here and Chris Clarkson.
“Last year I managed to get to a couple of games and saw a bond in the players that was pretty special and something that would be nice to be a part of.”
Although joining the Knights as a player, 34 year-old McShane also has an eye on learning his trade with the coaching staff.
“I’ve done a bit more of coaching but I’ve come first and foremost to be a player and I’ve still got a couple of years left in me. That’s my priority.
“I’m just learning as a coach how to run things. Mash (Mark Applegarth) has a good set up down here so I’m just learning off Mash.”
The move to the Knights has also meant an adjustment to becoming a part time player. While McShane is now juggling working with training, he says so far, it’s all working well for him especially after an injury hit couple of seasons at Castleford.
“I’ve started working in the school near me and getting longer days in. It’s really good and I’m glad I made that decision.
“It’s been a really frustrating couple of years. It’s just my arm really, I’ve been having a bit of trouble with that. But I’m feeling alright really and I’ve managed every session so I’m just looking forward. Not training every day is helping my body.
“I think we’ve got a great team here, some great medical staff. We’ve got a conditioner on board that really understands the game and what players need.
“He’s helping me get to my feet come the start of the season. I think not training every day in and out is definitely helping me.”
