Salter signs for 2021!

York City Knights are delighted to announce that centre Liam Salter has signed a new contract with the club for 2021.

The 27-year-old, sponsored by The Telford Family, signed for the Knights ahead of the 2019 season after joining from Hull Kingston Rovers. After graduating from their academy, Salter made his debut in 2012, making 121 Super League appearances for the Robins.

In his first season with the Knights, the centre established himself as a fans’ favourite and a key player for the team. Salter played in 26 Betfred Championship matches in 2019, scoring four tries, appearing in both centre and second-row. The former Myton Warriors junior is noted for his strong defence and was nominated for Player of the Year in 2019.

Of Salter’s retention, head coach James Ford said: “We’ve all really enjoyed working with Liam and I’m delighted he’s extended his stay.

“Liam is a very tough, physical rugby player who offers us some versatility. He carries the ball very effectively and with some real intent in his defensive contact. Liam’s attitude is first class and as long as that remains I’m confident he’ll keep performing to very high levels.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing Liam build a good combination with our halves and other edge players.”

Salter himself outlined his delight at signing for another season. “I’m very happy to be part of this club,” he explained. “The club has been progressing year upon year and is looking to progress further. It’s very exciting to be a part of.

“For me, York is somewhere I’ve really enjoyed my rugby for the last couple of years and it was an easy decision to re-sign.”

Following the announcement, Knights chairman Jon Flatman paid tribute to the club’s support. “We are able to retain players like Liam because of the generosity of our 2020 Knights Patrons and the continued hard work of Squadbuilder,” Flatman explained.

“Because of them, we are able to continue building a strong squad for next season and we hope to be able to repay their faith with a strong showing in 2021”

After Salter’s signature, the Knights now have nine signed up members of the squad for next season with more to follow in the coming weeks.
