York Knights moved a step closer to securing a play-off spot in the Betfred Championship, with a 24-26 win over Sheffield Eagles at Olympic Legacy Park.
The Knights built a 14 point lead with tries from Ata Hingano, Nikau Williams and two from Liam Harris.
However, two Sheffield Eagles tries in the final seven minutes from Matty Dawson-Jones and Tyler Dickinson meant a tense finish.Â
York hung on for the win to set up Sundayâs game at home to Featherstone Rovers as a potential winner takes all in the fight for the top six.
Early penalties conceded by the Knights helped put Sheffield on the front foot, and after just three minutes, Titus Gwaze went in near the posts, giving Cory Aston an easy conversion.
It was part of a dominant start for the Eagles, who are also battling to reach the play offs.
However, when Ata Hingano picked up a loose pass and went the length of the field, that early try was soon cancelled out. Nikau Williamsâ goal levelled the scores, and the Knights started to settle.
Williams was held up after Hingano broke through again, but he made no mistake when he supported another Hingano break to scoot in to give the Knights the lead.Â
That lead stretched when Liam Harris, on his return to the side from injury, touched down a kick through from Hingano. It was another easy task for Williams, who converted in front of the posts.
Before the break, Sheffield reduced the deficit. Former Knight, James Glover went in and Aston added the extra two points as the home side ended the first half strongly.
The second half started in a scruffy fashion, with both teams making errors. It was almost the hour mark before there were more points.
They came from a Sheffield error, which allowed Harris to pick up a loose ball and put York 10 points ahead. With Williamsâ conversion, York had a 12 point lead with 20 minutes to go.Â
A further two points from a Williams penalty meant the Knights were in control on the scoreboard.
The Eagles werenât done though, and a late revival started with first Matty Dawson-Jones finding a way over in the corner.Â
With Aston successful with the goal, Sheffield sensed a comeback.
When Anthony Thackery dummied his way through a gap to feed Tyler Dickinson with around three minutes remaining, that comeback was firmly on. Astonâs kick put them back to within two points.
It led to a further spell of pressure from the home side, but the Knights hung on for a vital victory.
