St.Helens v York Valkyrie: Grand Final Preview

đŸ€ York RLFC Match Previews are proudly sponsored by David Lloyd York!

York Valkyrie will aim to defend their Betfred Women’s Super League title on Sunday when they face St.Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium, St.Helens (4.30pm).

Lindsay Anfield’s side make the journey to face the League Leaders Shield winners and Challenge Cup holders, hoping to retain the trophy they won for the first time last year.

If York win, they’ll become the first team ever to defend the title.

After finishing top of the league last year, the Valkyrie beat Leeds Rhinos 16-6 at the LNER Community Stadium in the final to take the game’s top prize.

Tries from Tamzin Renouf, Tara-Jane Stanley and Lacey Owen, and two goals from Stanley were enough for York to win in front of a crowd of more than 4,500.

This will be York’s third consecutive final, against the side whose last appearance in the final was in 2021, when they beat Leeds 28-0.

York have met Saints three times already this season, with league wins being split one apiece, while St.Helens easily won the Challenge Cup semi-final tie against a depleted Valkyrie side.

The last game between the two was in August when St.Helens won 10-6 on their own ground, in what was York’s last defeat before going on a run of six wins that took them up to third in the table and past Leeds in the semi-final at Headingley.

St.Helens have lost just once in all competitions this season, in what was the 20-16 league defeat at York in the opening game in April.

This match will see York winger, Eboni Partington face her former club, after moving to the Valkyrie in the close season, along with another former Saint, Carrie Roberts, who was part of the victorious Valkyrie team last year.

For St.Helens, it’ll be the last game for half-back Faye Gaskin, who has announced she’ll retire at the end of the season.

Get behind the Valkyrie as they try to become the first team to defend the Betfred Women's Super League title!
