Swinton Lions v York Knights - Match Preview

York Knights will be seeking to secure back-to-back victories in the Betfred Championship for the first time this season when they visit Heywood Road to face newly-promoted Swinton Lions on Sunday (3pm).

York overcame last season’s fellow Play-Off qualifiers Barrow Raiders 28-14 at the LNER Community Stadium at weekend as Myles Harrison, Jesse Dee, Jon Luke Kirby, Ata Hingano and Joe Brown tries inspired the victory.

The result left the Knights on two wins and two defeats after the first four rounds, the same record as this weekend’s opponents Swinton.

The Lions secured a return to the Betfred Championship last year through the Betfred League One Play-Offs, toppling Doncaster RLFC 16-10 in the promotion decider.

Since then an assured start has been made by the Greater Manchester club after wins over Batley Bulldogs (16-30) and Barrow (20-18), two of 2022’s top five in the Betfred Championship.

Sandwiched between those shock triumphs have been defeats to Newcastle Thunder (6-18) and Whitehaven (20-4), two sides also likely to be battling it out with Swinton against relegation.

Andrew Henderson’s side head across the Pennines with a strong record over Swinton since 2015, having won all of their last six contests with the Lions.

Doubles from Matty Marsh and Kieran Dixon led York to a 46-10 thrashing of Swinton in July 2021 in the most recent meeting of the two clubs.

Marsh went even better when the Knights last visited Heywood Road, crossing for four tries in a 64-16 rout in April 2021.

This weekend, the Knights will hope to recall Chris Clarkson and Ronan Michael after injuries ruled them out of last weekend's win over Barrow.

Danny Kirmond is suspended while Matty Marsh, James Cunningham, Ukuma Ta'ai, Pauli Pauli, Olly Butterworth and Jamie Ellis remain sidelined through injury.
