Swinton Lions v York Knights - Match Preview

🤝 York RLFC Match Previews are proudly sponsored by David Lloyd York!

York Knights will be aiming to earn back-to-back wins for the first time in 2024 when they travel to Swinton Lions on Sunday (3pm).

York ended a three-match losing streak with a dominant 40-18 victory over Halifax Panthers last weekend, earning the side’s biggest Betfred Championship win since early July.

A Josh Daley double combined with scores from AJ Towse, Ukuma Ta’ai, Davy Litten, Joe Brown and Jimmy Keinhorst inspired the seven-try success and saw York leapfrog both Halifax and Batley Bulldogs up to 11th position.

The Knights now have the opportunity to further climb the league table with two points against Swinton this weekend.

Ninth-placed Swinton and 10th-placed Barrow Raiders both stand on six points heading into round nine of the competition, with York potentially able to jump up another two spots in the standings.

Andrew Henderson’s side will be fully aware of the threats posed by Swinton however, having seen the Lions claim a mightily impressive and shock 20-14 away win at full-time outfit Toulouse Olympique in April.

Swinton led 16-4 at half-time thanks to tries from Rhys Williams, Josh Eaves and Jordan Gibson before Richard Lepori put the visitors further in front early in the second period.

Reubenn Rennie and Jake Shorrocks hit back in the final 10 minutes for Toulouse, but the Manchester club held on for a famous two points.

The Lions backed that result up with successive wins later in the month over Dewsbury Rams and Halifax Panthers.

Doubles from Tee Ritson and Daniel Spencer-Tonks saw Swinton thrash Dewsbury 50-22 before Halifax were beaten 28-12 at The Shay.

While the Knights will be wary of the quality of Swinton, they will be equally confident having won all of the last eight meetings between the two sides.

The most recent of those was a 26-22 success at the LNER Community Stadium back in September as a second-half Oli Pratt brace aided York’s success.

The last clash between the clubs at Heywood Road ended in a 40-0 rout for York in March last year, with outside backs Joe Brown, AJ Towse and Myles Harrison all finishing with a couple of tries each.
