York Knights’ five match winning run came to an end with a 20-4 defeat at Wakefield Trinity in the Betfred Championship.

Brad Ward scored the Knights only try in a match where there wasn’t much to pick between the sides for long periods.

Wakefield built a 12-0 lead in almost as many minutes, but Ward’s try got Mark Applegarth’s side back in the game.

However, their efforts were enough to overturn the deficit against the league champions.

It leaves them in sixth place in the table with two games to go in the race for the play-offs.

Wakefield started strongly, restricting the Knights territory and twice forcing a drop out.

When Iain Thornley broke clear from deep inside his own half, Max Jowitt raced up in support to take the final pass and score the opening try, which he also converted.

On the next set, Jermaine McGillvary broke clear with a strong run down the right. He had Luke Gale with him to take the last pass to go in.

With the Knights struggling for possession, getting in to the Trinity 20 metre area was proving a challenge.

However, when they did, Brad Ward found a way over in space in the corner, and York were off the mark. Nikau Williams couldn’t convert.

That led to a better spell from the Knights who finally looked like getting into the game.

It was Wakefield who scored next, with McGillvary on the end of a some slick passing to go in at the corner. Jowitt just missed with the extras, but the home side took a 16-4 lead in to the break.

The second half started brightly for York, with Tom Lineham being tackled into touch close to the line.

Connor Bailey was then held up, but the Knights couldn’t get the Wakefield defence to crack.

There wasn’t much between the sides as the game reached the hour mark, but York still couldn’t break down the Wakefield line.

Some realistic chances were denied with a combination of errors and strong Wakefield tackling.

Lineham was almost able to take advantage of an overlap the Knights had worked, but he couldn't take the pass from Bailey which dipped as it reached him.

The second half deadlock finally broke when Derrell Olpherts scored in the corner with just three minutes to go, taking a tip on pass to find the space for what proved to be the final points of the game.
