Wigan Warriors v York Valkyrie: Match Preview

York Valkyrie can strengthen their bid for a home tie in the play-offs, when they travel to Wigan Warriors on Sunday for a key game in the Betfred Women’s Super League (2.30pm).

WIth York, Wigan and Leeds all level on 18 points and guaranteed a top four place, four points behind leaders St.Helens, the race for second is still alive with one game remaining after this weekend.

The Warriors have been in great form this season under the guidance of coach, Denis Betts, and they’ve run in some huge scores to give them a superior points difference in the table.

After reaching the semi-finals of the play-offs for the last two seasons, they’ve become serious contenders to reach the Grand Final this year.

Young players such as Grace Banks, Isabelle Rowe and Jenna Foubister have impressed alongside the likes of the experienced England international, Vicky Molyneux and Rachel Thompson.

Wigan have a tough end to the season, with a game at home to Leeds Rhinos to follow after their encounter with York.

The Valkyrie finish with a trip to Featherstone Rovers, who haven’t won in the league all year so everything is still very much to play for.

York are back in the mix for second place after a comprehensive 32-6 win last week at Leeds Rhinos, although that win could have come at a cost with full-back, Tara-Jane Stanley limping off injured in the second half.

Director of Rugby, Lindsay Anfield will be looking for a better performance against Wigan than earlier in the season, when the 18-10 win was Wigan’s first over one of the “big three” in the league.

It’s still the only one they’ve managed, with two defeats to St.Helens (8-24, 12-16) and one against Leeds Rhinos (8-28) this year.
