York Knights were knocked out of the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup at the Semi-Finals stage after Sheffield Eagles claimed a 28-18 victory at the LNER Community Stadium.
Sheffieldâs bright start saw them establish a 16-0 lead inside the opening quarter of an hour thanks to Matty Dawson-Jones, James Glover and Matty Marsh tries before York rallied to trail by just six points at the break after scores from Charlie Severs and Tom Lineham.
The two sides exchanged converted tries through Marsh and Jack Teanby but it was the Eagles who enjoyed the stronger finish, with Cory Aston nailing three penalty goals to seal the South Yorkshireâs side place at Wembley Stadium.
The visitors raced out of the blocks and went ahead inside two minutes when Dawson-Jones acrobatically finished a tip pass from Marsh in the left corner.
Five minutes later, Glover touched down an Aston grubber kick and before the quarter of an hour mark, Marsh got on the end of Anthony Thackerayâs reverse chip kick.
Aston converted the latter two tries.
York fought back however to close the gap to just one score by the break.
Ata Hingano sidestepped the Eagles defence with some terrific footwork to send over the supporting Severs.
With half-time quickly approaching Sheffield then failed to deal with a Liam Harris kick to the corner, allowing scrum-half to flick back inside for Lineham to dot down.
Two Will Dagger conversions left York 10-16 behind.
Marsh reasserted a two-score lead for Sheffield when supporting Gloverâs break down the left edge but York were back within a single score when Teanby finished a short kick by Harris.
Both tries were converted by Aston and Dagger respectively.
Sheffield managed to see how the victory however as a trio of penalty goals from Aston ensured a 28-18 victory and a trip to Wembley Stadium.
