York Knights did the double over Swinton Lions in the Betfred Championship after a strong defensive performance at the LNER Community Stadium.

A spell of three tries in eight second half minutes made sure they picked up their eighth win of the season and moved to within one point of the top six.

Nikau Williams scored two of the six tries with Ata Hingano kicking four of his six attempts at goal in a game played in sweltering conditions.

The Knights had the better start, with Josh Daley held up over the line inside the first five minutes.

However the deadlock eventually broke after 16 minutes when Josh Daley burrowed his way over for the Knights near the posts. Ata Hingano, back in the side after injury, converted.

A penalty for a ball steal four minutes later allowed Hingano to add a further two points to build an eight point lead.

More Swinton indiscipline meant York capitalised again. This time Jimmy Keinhorst was caught late off the ball and from the resulting set, Nikau Williams found space to go through. Hingano couldn’t add the extras.

Connor Bailey was sent to the sin bin just before half time for a high tackle on Mitch Cox, but Swinton weren’t able to take advantage from the resulting penalty. A forward pass meant the pressure eased on the Knights line.

With York still down to 12 men Swinton started the second half brightly, and came close to getting their first points only for George Roby to knock-on as he tried to burrow his way over.

After absorbing plenty of pressure and with Bailey back on the field, York hit a purple patch. First, Brad Ward was released down the wing, and he offloaded to Keinhorst for the Knights’ third try of the game. Hingano was successful with the conversion.

Four minutes later Keinhorst broke the line. Hingano was in support and he fed Williams to go in for his second of the afternoon. Hingano’s conversion in front of the posts took the lead to 24 points.

A third try in eight minutes came from speculative high kick on the last tackle which saw Oli Field beat Rhys Williams in the air to touch down. Hingano missed the conversion.

By now York were playing with confidence and frequently finding space. Sam Cook was the next to exploit that, throwing a huge dummy and crossing the whitewash. Hingano added the extras.

With three and a half minutes left on the clock, Swinton got their first points of the game when Jake Spedding found space in the corner to prevent York's third clean sheet in seven games.
