York Knights v Featherstone Rovers: Match Preview

York Knights take on Featherstone Rovers in a vital game in the Betfred Championship on Sunday at the LNER Community Stadium (3pm).

There’s a place in the play-offs at stake, and with that a potential home tie, as the teams in fourth and fifth come together with only points difference separating them in the table.

With both sixth placed Sheffield Eagles (28 points) and seventh placed Widnes Vikings (27 points) also still in with a chance of clinching a play-off spot, only a win will guarantee a place in the eliminators for either York or Featherstone.

With Sheffield taking on already relegated Dewsbury, and Widnes travelling to Barrow, nothing can be left to chance.

Both York and Featherstone have won 14 of their 25 league games, with the Knights picking up the two points in the reverse fixture at the Millennium Stadium in June, in what was their first league win at Featherstone since 1957.

Rovers built a 16-0 inside 15 minutes but the Knights came back with tries from Jack Teanby, Joe Brown, Josh Daley, Ukuma Ta’a, Ata Hingano and Liam Harris, and five Will Dagger goals.

Since then, the Knights have gone on a consistent run of form which has seen them climb up into the top six.

Featherstone have also found some form again after a mid-season dip of five consecutive defeats, and gone on to put a run together which has seen them keep their play-off hopes alive.

The game sees the return of former York coach, James Ford, who took over as head coach at Featherstone Rovers last season. There’s also former Knights’ favourites, Greg Minikin and Ben Reynolds in the squad.

It also puts Knights head coach, Mark Applegarth up against Ford who he worked alongside at both York and Wakefield Trinity.
