York Knights v Toulouse Olympique: Match Preview

York Knights start their home fixtures in the Betfred Championship against last season’s runners-up, Toulouse Olympique at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday (3pm)!

After a disappointing start to the season last week with a 50-4 defeat at newly promoted Oldham, Mark Applegarth’s side will be looking for a better performance in front of the home fans.

Toulouse also come into the game on the back of a defeat, having lost 18-14 at home to Widnes in their opening game last Saturday.

The last time York met Toulouse was in August in the south of France, when the Knights won 20-12 to record their first win abroad since 2011, and their first win over Olympique since 2013.

First half tries from Joe Brown and Nikau Williams laid the platform before Will Dagger scored in the second half to seal a memorable victory.

If the Knights can win at the weekend, it’ll be their first on home soil since 2013 when the Knights won 30-28 in the Betfred Challenge Cup at Huntington Stadium.

Kriss Brining scored twice for York that day, with further tries from Thomas Carr, Nat Browne and Jack Lee.

Like last season, Toulouse have once again retained most of their squad from the previous year, bringing in prop, Rob Butler from London and former Barrow forward, Ellis Gillam to help bolster it.

Leaving the club over the winter were Guy Armitage, Sitaleki Akauola, Harrison Hansen, Eloi Pelissier, Ryan Rivett and Mac Walsh, who is now with York.

The Knights will be missing captain, Liam Harris for the game while he goes through HIA protocols after he took a knock to the head at Oldham last week.

Longer term injuries, including Kieron Hudson, Brad Ward and Joe Law will also still miss out.
