York RLFC Foundation has reached more than 600 children in schools across the city of York, with the pioneering “On The Same Team” programme.
Developed by Rugby League’s Social Care Partner, Community Integrated Care, it’s designed to empower compassionate, inclusive attitudes in young people.
As part of the programme, York RLFC player, Myles Harrison has visited his old school, Vale of York Academy, to help deliver these key messages.
Myles, who signed a professional contract shortly after leaving school and coming through the ranks at Heworth RLFC, made before his debut for the Knights against Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup in 2021.
Myles spoke about how school and specific teachers helped him, as well as the positive role models who have inspired him in the sport. He talked about the challenges and the need to believe in yourself, when finding yourself in uncomfortable situations.
The funding provided by the York and North Yorkshire Office for Police, Fire, Crime and Commissioning’s Community Fund will be used over the next 12 months to support over 6,000 young people across 24 locations in the City of York to help address bullying and discrimination.
On The Same Team offers simple and inspiring educational lessons that help young people to understand the impact of their words and behaviours on other people, and how we all thrive when we’re On The Same Team.
The programme is delivered over a school half-term as we tackle stereotypes and highlight the positive role models that exist in our sport, including the Knights, Valkyrie and a number of other teams that now exist in the modern era, such as our Learning Disability Rugby League team and Wheelchair players.
The programme is led by Adam Prentis, York RLFC’s Foundations Delivery Manager, with York RLFC Inclusion Officer Dawn Shore leading the practical element of the programme.
Prentis said: “By combining the stories of rugby league players with the children's own experiences, the programme makes for a uniquely powerful and engaging learning.
“These themes are more relevant than ever and taking the time to talk to young people and appreciate each other's actions is vital for York to continue being a great place to live.
“Again, we would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to all partners involved including the schools we have visited so far, York and North Yorkshire Office for Policing, Fire, Crime and Commissioning, York CVS, City of York Council, Humber and North Yorkshire Care Partnership for commissioning the work and helping us use the fantastic resources that Community Integrated Care have produced."
