York Valkyrie 10-18 Wigan Warriors: Match Report

York Valkyrie suffered only their second Betfred Women’s Super League defeat of the season after Wigan Warriors came away from the LNER Community Stadium as 18-10 winners.

Tries from Eva Hunter and Ellise Derbyshire inside the opening quarter saw Wigan get off to a brilliant start before Eboni Partington hit back for York.

Hunter completed her double on the half-hour mark to reassert a two-score and 14-6 lead for the Warriors at half-time.

Jenna Foubister furthered the Wigan advantage just three minutes after half-time and although York again responded through Partington, overcoming a 12-point deficit proved too tough a challenge.

Wigan went ahead inside just three minutes as Hunter scored an incredible long-range try after breaking the York line from a 20m restart.

That advantage was doubled when Anna Davies made a strong break before a left-side shift put Derbyshire in at the corner.

York replied to trail by just two points when they worked an overlap to the left edge for Partington to touch down, with Tara Jane Stanley converting.

The visitors were back in front by two scores on the half-hour though when Hunter collected an offload from Foubister to race away for her second of the afternoon. Isabel Rowe added the conversion.

Wigan raced out of the blocks in the second half as Foubister crashed over from close range.

Stanley went close to replying for York with an inventive chip-and-chase but it took until the 78th minute for the Valkyrie to find a second try.

Partington scored it by squeezing in at the left corner, though it would prove to be a consolation score for the hosts.
