York Valkyrie 40-6 Wigan Warriors - Match Report

York Valkyrie recorded a fourth straight victory in the Betfred Women's Super League after a convincing 40-6 victory over Wigan Warriors at the LNER Community Stadium.

Lacey Owen crossed for two first-half tries while Ellie Hendry, Rhiannion Marshall, Sinead Peach also found the whitewash in the first 40 minutes as York racked up a 26-0 lead at the break.

Tara Jane Stanley, Emma Kershaw and Sade Rihari added further scores in the second half while Ella Hunter registered Wigan's sole consolation try.

The victory ensured the Valkyrie retained their spot at the top of the BWSL.

Lindsay Anfield's side needed just seven minutes to find the opener, with Hendry brilliantly finished in the left corner.

Marshall doubled the lead 10 minutes later when, with her first carry from the bench, she fended off multiple Wigan defenders to barge under the sticks.

Stanley added the first of four conversion from seven attempts.

Owen bagged her first of the afternoon when racing through a gap from Rihari's fired pass before Captain Peach scooted out of dummy-half in front of the sticks.

The Rihari-Owen combination struck before the break as another stunning pass from the half-back put the England international over for a second.

York made a rapid start to the second half, forced a goal-line drop-out from the restart from which Tamzin Renouf's offload allowed Stanley to dance over. She converted her own try for her 100th point of the season.

Stanley turned provider with an offload to the unmarked Kershaw for a simple touchdown in the right corner.

Wigan did manage to put points on the board when Eva Hunter hit a strong line to the left of the sticks, with Cerys Jones converting.

But York would have the final word on the contest when Rihari dives in at the right corner from Kershaw's offload.
