York Valkyrie reached the quarter final stage of the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup, with a win over Featherstone Rovers in the group game at the LNER Community Stadium.

Savannah Andrade got a hat-trick as the Valkyrie scored eleven tries, five converted by Ellie Williamson.

There were also braces for Jazz Rampton, Tara Moxon and Tamzin Renouf as York progressed with two wins from two in group B.

They’ll find out who their opponents will be in the next stage after the group games are completed next weekend.

A scrappy opening period saw both teams struggle to control the ball, but the better of the territory and opportunities went the way of the Valkyrie.

The first try came from Williamson. A Renouf pass released her out wide, and the Australian’s pace and footwork saw her go in from around the half way line. She added the conversion.

Andrade was the next to get on the scoresheet a few minutes later, and again WIlliamson added the extras from in front of the posts.

Rampton scored after a lovely flowing move allowed her space to cross from 15 metres out, but too near the touchline for Williams to convert.

Izzy Bibby scooted over for a try on her debut for York, but it was Featherstone who scored next. A penalty gave Rover their best position of the half, and Liv Grace took advantage to dive over from close range. Dani Waters converted.

That try was cancelled out though when Rampton crossed again. Williamson was unsuccessful with the kick, but the Valkyrie led 24-6 at half time.

Moxon got her first try in York colours, after taking a well timed pass from Sade Rihari, which saw her race in from 40 metres. Williamson converted.

Moxon’s second came soon after, again linking up with Rihari to power through the line to score. This time, Williamson’s kick at goal hit the post.

Andrade went in for a second after some jinking footwork opened up the defence from 20 metres out. Williamson tagged on the goal to bring up the 40 point mark for the Valkyrie.

Renouf was next to score, after Andrade broke through the defence and slipped a pass out to allow her to go in from close range.

Andrade got her hat-trick after again causing the Featherstone defence problems with her strength and speed, breaking clear from half way. Williamson’s goal put the score at the 50 point mark.

Renouf got her second when she got around the outside of the Rovers defence, in what proved to be the last move of the game.
