York Valkyrie v Leigh Leopards : Challenge Cup Match Preview

York Valkyrie can move to within 80 minutes of an appearance at Wembley, when they take on Leigh Leopards in the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup quarter-final at the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday (12pm)!

The game is being played as a double header, with York Knights taking on Widnes Vikings in the Betfred Championship at 3pm.

The Valkyrie are trying to reach the semi-finals of the competition for the fifth consecutive year, and potentially make the final for only the second time.

This year, York have beaten Huddersfield Giants 56-0 and Featherstone Rovers 54-6 to move in to the knock-out stages as their group stage winners.

Leigh Leopards lost to Leeds Rhinos 46-4 in their opening group game, before being awarded the match against Sheffield Eagles who couldn’t raise a team to complete their fixtures.

This is only the second time that Leigh have reached this stage of the competition, having previously lost to Leeds Rhinos in 2023.

For the first time, Leigh are a Super League club, following their 34-16 win over Featherstone Rovers in last year’s promotion/relegation play off final.

Coach, Kieron Purtill boasts a squad with plenty of experience, with former Wigan players, Becky Greenfield and Emily Baggaley amongst those having played Super League.

Captain, Storm Cobain is an Ireland international, while former Warrington player, Kiera McCosh has Welsh caps to her name.

The winners of this game with face the winners of St.Helens v London Broncos in the semi-finals next month.
